Fire Opal Matrix - Mexico's Volcanic Colors
In this colourful Fire Opal variety, the red-brown igneous rhyolite matrix stone is grown together with shining pools of opal. This inconspicuous background is a strong contrast to the vivid play-of-colour of the opal.
The usually bright red to yellow-orange colour of the opal reminds us of the volcanic landscape in which the Mexican Fire Opals were formed. However, the opal in a Fire Opal Matrix stone can be nearly colourless and transparent as well, giving the impression of rainbow colors dancing at the bottom of a clear lake. Depending on lighting conditions, different pictures appear in the stone. These endless possibilities can show fascinating miniature landscapes or magical images that captivate the eye and seem to tell stories. There are no limitations for the imagination when looking at a Fire Opal Matrix stone.
This opal variety is considered a symbol of serenity and joy of life, and is especially popular with artists and creative people.
Mining and processing
The mountains of Mexico are home to this fascinating opal variety, the main mining areas of which can be found around Magdalena and Querétaro. In these areas, the search for precious opal has a rich tradition. Even the Aztecs collected these valuable stones, and used them for jewellery, mosaics, and ritualistic purposes.
